Valley National Bank Participates In The Association For Neighborhood And Housing Development’s (ANHD) 7th Annual Community Development Conference

WAYNE, N.J. - Thursday, May 17, 2017 - Wade JacobsonOver 450 individuals attended ANHD’s 7th Annual Community Development Conference at the Grand Hyatt Empire Ballroom in Midtown, New York on April 26th. Keynote Speaker Maria T. Vullo, New York State Superintendent of Financial Services, spoke about New York City’s CRA law, expressed the need for financial access in communities in underserved areas and discussed the Consumer Protection Act.

The event included three workshops: Tracks to Build the Community Development Movement covering the Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities and Threats across Community Development (CD), Small Businesses and Housing and Urban Development and Mission-Driven Development. Among the CD solutions discussed by panels of experts were:
  • Community Land Trusts for permanent affordability
  • Partnerships such as joint ventures with faith-based land holders and developers
  • Zoning, Asset Management and layers of capital including the New Markets Tax Credit Program (NMTC )
  • Mixed-use development including arts, retail and green spaces

Valley’s Division Head of Commercial Loans Eileen Sackman served as a banking expert on the workshop panel entitled, “Small Business Lending: the Need, the Challenges, and the Opportunities.” Ms. Sackman discussed how access to credit and cash flow remains an affordability issue for small businesses. She also talked about positive trends in lending including bank partnerships with Community Development Financial Institutions which Valley facilitates through a Second Look referral program. Ms. Sackman also fielded questions about traditional bank financing for small businesses in comparison to funding from not-for-profits, Community Development Financial Institutions Funds (CDFIs), Economic Development Corporations and the SBA.
