Van Dyk Health Care has been serving New Jersey families since 1953, embracing the motto of “Family Caring For Family.”  With several generations of family ownership, originally centered around skilled nursing, Van Dyk’s continuum of care has evolved into assisted living, home health care and adult day care for seniors battling Alzheimer’s and dementia.

As the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread across New Jersey, Van Dyk knew his team of 300 health care heroes was facing a challenge of epic proportions. The Van Dyk leadership team remained focused on proactive safety measures on behalf of its staff and the seniors they serve. They emphasized the importance of ordering and wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as following strict infection control policies, in order to quickly contain a virus that had already devastated northern New Jersey. 


Since hospitals and nursing homes rely more heavily on Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements, nearly all federal and state relief packages related to the COVID-19 pandemic have been directed to these facilities.  Assisted living communities like Van Dyk Park Place, which serves the same frail and vulnerable seniors as hospitals and nursing homes, have been left with fewer options for financial relief.  When the SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program opened for funding, Van Dyk called on the bank that has remained one of its longest standing partners – Valley.


“We can’t thank our friends at Valley enough for their ongoing, timely assistance in processing our three Payroll Protection Program Loan applications,” says Van Dyk. “We want everyone to know of the vital role Valley Bank has played in helping us protect our staff and our elderly during these harrowing times.”


Van Dyk Health Care is using the funds to not only keep its staff employed, but also provide them with higher battlefield rates, hazard pay bonuses, and overtime pay. The financial help the SBA offers with payroll costs and loan interest has allowed Van Dyk to care for staff in other ways, such as purchasing groceries and special meals to boost morale, as well as offering mental health support in managing the stress of serving on the front lines of this pandemic. Van Dyk has also used funds to replenish inventory of PPE, provided to staff and seniors, including N95 respirator masks, gloves, face shields and scrubs.  


“These loans help us set aside enough funds to maintain a steady and appropriate supply of PPE,” Van Dyk said. “We need these supplies to protect our staff and our seniors, so we can properly fight this invisible enemy.”
