In a community where everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive, the Ridgewood YMCA in Ridgewood, New Jersey is at the center. Every day the organization works side by side with their neighbors to provide multifaceted programs that enhance individual and family well-being. The Ridgewood YMCA is a nonprofit charitable organization that has been serving youth, adults and families in Northern New Jersey since 1902, as part of a worldwide YMCA. Their mission is to positively impact lives through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, building spirit, mind and body for all.

“Knowing we’re making a difference in the health and wellness of our members through childcare, community outreach programs and gym memberships is both personally and professionally rewarding,” says Ernest Lamour, President & CEO.

Fun Fact: The Ridgewood YMCA has been a part of the Ridgewood community for 118 years—since 1902!

Behind the SignServing communities during a global pandemic

In March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, the organization was forced to close their doors. However, it didn’t stop them from continuing to support their most vulnerable communities. They quickly shifted their focus and resources to emergency blood drives, weekly food box distributions, meal deliveries and member wellness outreach. Even though they couldn’t allow anyone into their building, they still managed to be there for their communities.

While they were out there, finding ways to help their communities, the organization was grateful for their Valley team who helped them secure a PPP loan. “Valley also deferred our mortgage payments while we were not generating our regular business revenue,” says Anne McDonnell, SVP of Development & Marketing.

Shared community values

With community as their focus, having a bank that shares the same community values is important to the organization. When the Ridgewood YMCA was looking to refinance their existing mortgage, a member of their board of directors recommended Valley. They were referred directly to Aaron Durnion, Commercial Loan Officer, who helped them through the process. “Aaron's professionalism and diligence made this refinancing as seamless and expeditious as possible,” says Anne.

The Ridgewood Y takes advantage of the easily accessible branch locations to do their banking and they also know they can rely on their two primary contacts at Valley: Aaron Durnion and Maryann Hudson, Market Manager. “Both Maryann and Aaron are very customer service focused and responsive. They typically get back to any of our inquiries in a very timely manner,” says Ernest.

Rebuilding our communities

Our communities thrive when the businesses within them thrive. Valley is proud to support the businesses that make up our communities like the Ridgewood YMCA, an organization that has made such a difference for its members and in supporting those in need during the pandemic. “Valley Bank is proud to have customers such as the Ridgewood YMCA, which despite the challenges the organization has faced as a result of Covid-19, has done a remarkable job of continuing to have a positive impact on the greater Ridgewood community. The alignment of our corporate values has made this relationship a success and we look forward to continuing to support the Ridgewood YMCA in its mission to positively impact lives,” says Aaron Durnion.
