In good times and bad, people need to do their laundry. Nearly 50 years ago, Bob Savino was inspired by this notion and a desire to provide a service that could always be utilized. Bob was working in construction but saw the potential in apartment buildings being developed in a post-World War II development booming area. That's when the idea of providing a central laundry room to multiple dwellings was born.

A family business at the core

Automatic Industries in Hempstead, New York is currently owned and operated by Bob’s daughter, Denise Savino. The business will continue to stay in the family with Denise’s daughter, Ashley, who is studying business at Fairfield University and plans to eventually join the family business fulltime.

Over the past 50 years, Automatic Industries has evolved with the times. They’ve shifted from coin-operated laundry machines to now offering innovative technology like credit card, internet and app-based systems. The family has also made environmentally friendly machinery a priority with washing machines not only engineered to work better but also be more energy efficient and use less water.

Fun fact:  Automatic Industries is the only “woman owned” laundry route company in New York.

Customers at the heart of the business

One thing that hasn’t changed for Automatic Industries, is a passion for their customers. Unlike many others in the industry, the business provides boutique service. Interacting with their customers every day allows them to know and appreciate their customers.

"We operate a very different organization than our competitors,” says Denise. “We’re not just stockholders, we work for folks that use our service.”

The Savino family has the opportunity to work with a diverse clientele with laundry rooms in a variety of settings like luxury buildings, subsidized Senior Housing, college dormitories, hotels, and even campgrounds. Working with such varied locations offers a challenge for Automatic Industries that they truly enjoy.

“Working in so many different communities is so rewarding,” says Denise. “It gives us as much pleasure to service a high-end condominium as it does to create a space in transitional housing.”

Helpful banking partners at their side

Choosing the right banking partner for their customer-driven business was important to Automatic Industries. Having dealt with big banks in the past, the family knows what it’s like to get lost in the shuffle. The personal touch Valley offers as their banking partner made the decision easy.

“Working with Valley is a great fit. We hold similar standards for customer service," says Denise. "We both know, appreciate and go the extra mile for our customers.”

In addition to banking with Valley, Denise is a member of Valley’s Women in Business program. She and her daughter, Ashley have attended networking events where they’ve been able to deepen their connections with the Valley team and network with other women in business.

Looking ahead

Next year Automatic Industries will be in business for 50 years. What started as an idea for offering a timeless service has evolved into a family business that’s spent half a century providing superior customer service to their clients. We can’t wait to see what the next 50 has in store for them.
